Antibiotic Stewardship

The responsible use of antibiotics is an area of high priority for our practice teams and so we have made this a key area of focus for our Clinical Board Quality Improvement (QI) work.

Over the past few years, we have monitored our baseline data on the overall use of antibiotics within the business, as well as focussing on the use of specific medicines. With these data we can look at variability between practices and together we can share ideas about how to make practical changes to further our stewardship.

We have also explored certain conditions where our teams reported they would like to change their practice and we use QI techniques to facilitate this. All this work is aimed at enabling our teams to reduce, refine and replace our use of antibiotics and protect these important medicines while still protecting our great clinical outcomes.

We recognise that good antimicrobial stewardship is a team effort and that we all have a responsibility to combat antimicrobial resistance, not just those prescribing. So, we include our nursing, tech, yard, lab and client care teams in our antibiotic stewardship work so that we can all collectively progress our practice.

In 2022, during Antimicrobial Awareness Week, we launched our first Antibiotic Stewardship Report and we were delighted with the impact it had. We were contacted by people throughout the UK and beyond to discuss our work and how we can partner with others to make a difference. We have made a commitment to publish these updates each year and our reports to-date can be accessed here.
