TRAINING designed to support colleagues and challenge the stigma surrounding mental health is now underway at VetPartners, following a strong response from team members keen to take part.
The first of eight training sessions took place this month at VetPartners’ headquarters in York, with 45 colleagues from practices across the group completing Level 1 and Level 2 training.
There will be a session in Ireland on May 27th at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
The Mental Health Matters programme aims to equip colleagues with the knowledge and confidence to support both themselves and others experiencing mental health conditions.
From raising awareness of personal wellbeing to helping senior leaders develop protocols, strategies and practical tools, the training is playing a key role in fostering more supportive workplace cultures.

Level 2 training also addresses more complex and sensitive issues, including supporting colleagues affected by self-harm, substance misuse, psychosis and suicide awareness.
Importantly, the programme promotes a collaborative approach to mental health, moving away from the idea that responsibility sits with individuals alone. The training is now aligned with the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme, which incorporates mental health and wellbeing into its requirements.

Delivered by VetPartners Mental Health Trainer and Wellbeing Lead, Tessa Beecroft, the sessions provide insight into stress, burnout and compassion fatigue, as well as guidance on recognising common mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.
Tessa said: “Our aim is to ensure that those attending the courses feel confident and comfortable having conversations about mental health, and to help create positive, open workplace cultures.

“In the Level 2 training, we also provide an understanding of legislation, reasonable adjustments and why prioritising mental health within teams is so important. We want colleagues to feel equipped with the tools they need to approach conversations in a supportive and constructive way.
“It’s also about the importance of signposting to resources, so everyone understands what professional support is available and how to raise concerns within their team.”
