A PRACTICE team who pulled together to provide the best possible care for six racing greyhounds suffering from suspected Leptospirosis have been honoured with a special award from VetPartners.

Despite the valiant efforts of the team at Farnham Veterinary Hospital in Surrey, the dogs were so seriously ill that only one survived.

Their desperate trainer contacted the practice even though he was not a registered client as he was struggling to find vets to accommodate all of his dogs after a large number became ill.

Working round the clock, the practice turned their meeting room into a temporary isolation ward, and everyone pulled together, with veterinary nurses coming in to help during the night. Even though team members stayed until the early hours, they still reported for duty the next morning.

All the dogs were dehydrated and were put on fluids and needed blood tests. Isolation processes were put in place to ensure the safety of all patients and routine operations and appointments were postponed.

While most of the hospital team were invested in the care of the greyhounds, 17 vets, veterinary nurses and receptionists were nominated for a joint Nettie award - Silvia Cossin, Helena Gurdin, Lucy Gay, Kelly Strange, Izzy Jones, Rose Georgakakos, Tom Huskisson, Alison Marriott-Clark, Leah Blades, Holly Berecloth, Laila Davies, Alison Ruse, Karie Sladen, Kylie Cotton, Sharon Disney-May, Sheona Clayton and Josh Buck.

They won a Nettie for demonstrating our values of being respectful, supportive, dedicated, approachable and collaborative.

Maria O’Brien, from Farnham’s client care team, who helped to nominate her colleagues for the award, said: “This was a difficult and tragic set of circumstances and the whole team pulled together showing all of the VetPartners values. The team work and support is a huge testament to the whole team and everyone should be proud of themselves.”

Valley Vets RVN Nicole Bates is also among our latest Nettie winners for the help she gave to a man experiencing a mental health crisis.

Nicole went above and beyond to ensure the man received the help he needed by calling 111, as well as asking her team members to contact the RSPCA to rehome his poorly cats.

Mark Dorner’s hard work was key to helping Pet Cremation Services in East Boldon to achieve their Investors in the Environment Silver award, and now he has been rewarded with a Nettie.

Mark, the crematorium site manager, spent months reviewing their sustainability and then implementing changes to benefit both the business and the environment.

Stable Close Equine Clinical Director Alex Sergeant was nominated by colleague Jayne Bonner in recognition of her exceptional dedication, leadership and support to the practice and the team.

Mayes & Scrine Student Veterinary Nurse Georgie Stevens has taken on extra responsibilities, and her dedication, enthusiasm and care have earned her a Nettie.

She organised a BEVA CPD event at the practice which turned out to be a huge success.
